Initial and periodic examinations plus preventative procedures including prophylaxis (cleaning of the teeth) are the mainstay of modern dentistry. There are various aspects evaluated during a complete examination, including oral cancer screening, periodontal screening, decay check, occlusion (bite) check, and jaw function (TMD) check. Limited examinations are focused on problems that bring patients to the office with toothaches, etc. Preventative services include oral hygiene assessments, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and nutrition guidance. Brush biopsy can be done on suspicious oral sores or legions.
